Q. What is the Rogue?
A. The Rogue is a non-juried arts festival that celebrates the independent performer and artist. This annual celebration is made up of  theatre, music, dance, film, performance art, puppetry, spoken word, storytelling, visual arts and more. O.K., it sounds like a Fringe Festival... but with a 21st century sensibility.

Q. Non-juried? What is that?
A.
The Rogue is committed to an artist’s right to produce work without the judgment of a jury process and without fear of censure.

Q. That sounds serious... like something out of an official "policies" manual... what is the real story here?
A. You are right! So, here is the nitty gritty. Unlike the garden variety "arts festival" the Rogue does not believe that a group of so-called experts should decide what is good or what an audience should see. We believe that a performer has the right to present his or her work and that a paying audience is fully capable of deciding for themselves if they like it or not.

Q. When and Where is the Rogue?
A. During the Spring. The 2004 Festival will take place between the end of February through March 13th in the cultural and historic Tower District of Fresno, California. For directions from your home... click here.

Q. How long has this Rogue thing been going on?
A. Since 2002. The Rogue was first powered byTheatre J'Nerique-an independent theatre company that develops and produces new works for the stage. This wacky group of zanies actually came upon  the insane notion that audiences were tired of the tried and true and were hungry for the bold and new.

Q. So, has the Rogue been successful since it began?
A. Why yes... yes, it has. In 2002 the Festival showcased 16 performing companies and attracted over 1200 audience members to two venues. In 2003, the Festival showcased over 25 performing companies ( including 2 national groups) and more than doubled audience attendance. The Festival also was bestowed with a Proclamation by the City of Fresno and was chosen as The Greatest Event On Earth by Festivals.com

Q. Apart from performing groups and audience numbers, how else is the Rogue growing?
A. For the 2004 Festival we are adding three new components to the Rogue! The Electric Rogue will feature bands, the Rogue Gallery will showcase the visual artist and we are including the BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) to the Performance Festival.

Q. How do I get my show into the Rogue?
A. Apply. The Rogue Festival is non-juried, as long as you apply on time and pay your application fee, chances are good you will get a show in. For additional information e-mail
darogue@roguefestival.com or darogue@itcamefromfresno.com or mail us at
Rogue Festival, 416 E. Brown Avenue, Fresno, CA 93704. For Applications and Information on the Venues CLICK HERE!

Q. You keep harping on this "non-juried" concept... are there awards given out at the Rogue Performance Festival?
A. Yes, during ONE BIG ROGUE PARTY held on closing night we do give out awards. They include the Rogue SOLD OUT Award, the Rogue PRODUCER Award
and this year we are adding the Rogue EXQUISITE Award. The SOLD OUT and EXQUISITE awards are determined by the audience. The PRODUCER Award by the Rogue Producers. CLICK HERE to see who earned bragging rights from the last 2 Rogue Festivals.

Q. How much does it cost to have my show in the Rogue?
A. The application fee could range between US $35 to US $190 depending on the venue. For the Rogue Performance Festival your application fee provides you with allotted number performances of your show, a tech and box office, a listing in the program, plus 100 percent of the box office. Anything you want to spend beyond that is up to you. For details on a suitable venue for your performance CLICK HERE.

Q. Is my show a good Rogue show?
A. Well, if you think it’s something your friends would pay to see, and not be mad at you for telling them to come, then you’ve got a hit on your hands. There’s only one way to find out if its a good show, and that’s to do it. Remember, the Rogue is a non-juried festival—that means first come, first served. No one auditions, no one decides... except the audience.

Q. Am I guaranteed anything?
A. No. You receive 100 percent of the box sales from your show. It is up to you to promote your show. We will promote the Festival and provide you with guidance on how to have a successful Rogue run, but you take it from there!

Q. WHY? WHY? WHY?

A. Why not? Why not offer artists a low-cost opportunity to showcase experimental and polished works? Why not offer audiences an affordable chance to sample a variety of theatrical styles? Why not create an opportunity to develop and discover upcoming and innovative talent?  We feel its a worthy and an exciting opportunity to expand the Arts in our area... so, why not?

Q. This sounds great but I'm artistically challenged... how can I support this Rogue thing?
A. We are glad you asked. 1. We are always looking for volunteers. We are always looking for SPONSORS. We are always looking for an adventurous AUDIENCE looking to experience something new and dynamic.
