TITLE: Grant COMPANY: Why Knot Theatre Company ( Spearfish, South Dakota) STYLE: SOLO PERFORMANCE-A one man show depicting Ulysses S. Grant on the eve of the end of the Civil War. PERFORMER: Benjamin Latham DESCRIPTION: The General reflects on his involvement in the war- from his uneager reentry into military leadership at the start of the war, through his triumphs and defeats on and off the battlefield, and ending in his leading the Union forces to victory. It is a must-see for students of the Civil War and American history in general. The play truly allows the audience to experience ‘Grant’- the man, the legend, the leader. TITLE: Cruz (Incident at Labor Camp 12) AUTHOR: Written & Directed by Augustin Lira COMPANY: Teatro De La Tierra (Fresno, CA) STYLE: One Act Play DESCRIPTION: The piece is based on Augustin Lira’s new book, “The Garden of Eden”, ‘An Autobiography of Augustin Lira’s Life, Part 1`”. The story is taken from his childhood, a time when he and his family lived in a labor camp in the San Joaquin Valley (the camp was close Five Points). It deals with the human interactions of the families struggling to survive and maintain a sense of community. The piece speaks of the problems that Lira’s mother encountered while they lived in the camp. It was more than an economic struggle, it had to do with learning how to overcome ‘baser’ elements that could have led to tragedy. RATING: |
