TITLE: Cruz (Incident at Labor Camp 12)
AUTHOR: Written & Directed by Augustin Lira
COMPANY: Teatro De La Tierra (Fresno, CA)
STYLE: One Act Play
DESCRIPTION: The piece is based on Augustin Lira’s new book, “The
Garden of Eden”, ‘An Autobiography of Augustin Lira’s Life, Part 1`”. The
story is taken from his childhood, a time when he and his family lived in a labor
camp in the San Joaquin Valley (the camp was close Five Points). It deals with
the human interactions of the families struggling to survive and maintain a sense
of community. The piece speaks of the problems that Lira’s mother encountered
while they lived in the camp. It was more than an economic struggle, it had to do
with learning how to overcome ‘baser’ elements that could have led to tragedy.
