Rogue Festival
Event to feature 59 performances during 5-day run.

STAFF REPORT

The Rogue Performance Festival is returning for a second year with more shows and more performers, organizers say. There will be 59 performances during the five-day festival, Feb. 28, March 1, 2, 7 and 8, shown in two Tower District locations.

This year's theater, music, performance and film festival has attracted 24 performing groups, seven more than last year. Most of the groups are from Fresno, but some are from Kingsburg, San Francisco and South Dakota.

Performances lasting up to one hour can be seen at The Starline, 831 E. Fern Ave., with a new show every 90 minutes. Cabaret acts lasting up to 40 minutes will be performed on the patio of Veni Vidi Vici, 1116 Fulton St. Organizers say all performances will begin on time.

There are evening and matinee performances, kicking off with several shows at 7 p.m. Feb. 28.

Ticket prices are set by the performers. Organizers say no ticket prices will be higher than $5 at The Starline or $3 at Veni, Vidi, Vici.

"Many groups charge less or even perform for free," said Marcel Nunis, artistic and managing director of the Rogue Performance Festival.

"All ticket proceeds go directly to the performers, so when you buy a ticket to a Rogue show, you are directly supporting new art and new artists," Nunis said.

"The success of the Rogue has been an important step in the development of Fresno as a cultural center," Nunis said. "We created the Rogue because we believe the arts should be part of everyday life, here in the San Joaquin Valley and everywhere else."

Last year more than 1,200 people came to see 17 groups give 50 performances at the first Rogue Performance Festival. With two locations this year, Nunis said he expects a bigger audience.

The performances range from "silly to serious, comic to dramatic," Nunis said. A sampling of the acts includes: "In Search of the American Bellydancer" featuring the Ananka Dance Co. of Fresno; "Grant" by the Why Knot Theatre Co. of Spearfish, S.D., a one-man show depicting Ulysses S. Grant on the eve of the end of the Civil War; "Pandermonium: Green Card Envy" by Theatre J'Nerique of Fresno; "An Evening of Magic with Dexter," featuring Dexter the Magician of Fresno; and singer Bradley James Rogers of Fresno.

Not all shows are appropriate for all ages. Ratings listed with each show range from "G" to "R."
