Merlinda Espinosa, a 17-year-old singer, is
scheduled to perform as part of the Rogue Festival in
the Tower District the next two weekends. Espinosa will
perform at Veni Vidi Vici, 1116 N. Fulton, at 1 p.m.
Saturday (March 1) and at 6:30 p.m. on March 8.
Espinosa has studied voice and guitar with Agustín
Lira. She has also toured throughout California.
Tickets for the event are $3, and can be purchased at
the door.
Rondalla Nuevo Mundo, which is directed by Patricia
Wells Solórzano, will perform at Veni Vidi Vici at 2:30
p.m. Saturday (March 1). The group will perform Nuevo
Canto songs from Latin América and the U.S. Admission is
$3.
Telemundo soap opera
MIAMI -- Rafael Novoa and Karen Martínez star in
'Sofía ... Dame Tiempo' (Sofía ... Give Me Time), a soap
opera that will debut on the Telemundo network (Channel
59 locally) on March 3.
The actors play the roles of Santiago Rodríguez and
Sofía Santero, who grew up as kids thinking that they
would get married, have children and live happily ever
after. However, destiny has a different plan for these
lovebirds.
The soap opera will be shown weekdays at 7 p.m.
Music promoter dies
LOS ANGELES -- Latin music concert promoter Ralph
Hauser III, who is credited with helping elevate the
profile of Latin music in the United States, died Feb.
14 of a heart attack while playing racquetball. He was
41.

Tim Z. Hernández will perform 'Skin Tax: Diaries of a
Macho' at Veni, Vidi, Vici, 1116 N. Fulton, at 9:30 p.m.
Friday (Feb. 28) ... Fresno native Gary Soto will read
and discuss new and older selected works at Barnes &
Noble, 7849 N. Blackstone, at 7 p.m. March 6. He will be
joined by special guest Jessie De La Cruz, who is the
subject of one of his books ... Pilar Montenegro and Los
Huracanes del Norte were among the winners of the El
Heraldo Awards held last Wednesday in México City.
